Bloating Foods

Nothing is worse than feeling gassy and bloated when you want to slip into your bikini and lounge poolside. While everyone knows that there are certain foods that bloat you after two bites, did you know that there are foods that can actually help to beat the bloat? Check out the segment I’m doing tonight on LXTV, where I’ll be talking about some bloating foods and what you can do to get a flat, bikini-ready belly. In case you miss the segment, here are a few bloat-friendly and unfriendly foods.

Some foods to avoid:

  • Fried food
  • Highly processed foods
  • Carbonated beverages
  • Salty Foods
  • Sugar Alcohols

Some foods to help get rid of that bloat:

  • Lemon water
  • Yogurt- unless of course you’re lactose intolerant!
  • Ginger
  • Tea (peppermint, dandelion, lemon balm)
  • Fennel
  • Asparagus
  • Papaya
  • Celery
  • Pineapple

Hydrating in this Heat!

It’s hot, hot, hot out there! The expected high today in NYC is 103 F, the highest temperature in nine years! On days like today, everyone needs to be concerned about staying hydrated. I’ll be on LXTV tonight talking about just that – the best foods and best tips to keep you hydrated and healthy.

Fruits and veggies have a very high water content – incorporate some of these hydrating foods into your day – all day long:

Fruits
  • watermelon
  • strawberries
  • blueberries
  • raspberries
  • grapefruit
  • melon (cantaloupe and honeydew)
  • oranges
  • apples
  • kiwi

Vegetables (try to keep veggies raw – they lose their water when overcooked)
  • tomatoes
  • lettuce
  • celery
  • bok choy
  • bell pepper
  • cabbage
  • spinach
  • carrots
Tips to Stay Hydrated and Safe
  • Don’t let yourself get thirsty! Carry a water bottle with you and keep track of how many bottles you drink throughout the day.
  • Eat at least one hydrating food at every meal and snack.
  • If you’re lightheaded, replenish with fluids rich in electrolytes, like Zico coconut water.
  • If you haven’t gone to the bathroom in a couple of hours, drink more!
  • If you’re at high risk for dehydration (young children, elderly) stay inside in air conditioning on days like today!
Hydrating with Food
  • At lunch, have a green salad loaded with veggies like spinach, tomatoes, crunchy carrots, and bell pepper.
  • Add grapefruit slices and blueberries to any green salad for a sweet (& hydrating) treat.
  • Make a refreshing coleslaw with cabbage, nonfat Greek yogurt, and lemon juice.
  • Make a melon salad with watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, and mint leaves.
  • Enjoy cold soups like gazpacho.
  • Freeze fruits like grapes and watermelon.

Summer Time!

I am a Boston girl at heart and Winter will always be my favorite season – but one of the things I do LOVE about Summer is the abundance of colorful, delicious fruit. Summertime fruits, especially peaches, are my favorite. As much as it’s nice to be carefree in the Summer, unfortunately, we can’t be that way when it comes to our fruit and veggies. The Environmental Working Group’s list of the “Dirty Dozen” (fruits and veggies highest in pesticides) includes seven summertime fruits. Peaches, strawberries, apples, U.S.-grown blueberries, nectarines, cherries, and imported grapes are all included. While these reports do seem disappointing, don’t let it put a halt to your enjoying Summertime fruit. Instead, use it to your advantage and make better choices by prioritizing where to spend extra money on organic produce. The EWG estimates that consumers can reduce their pesticide exposure 80 percent just by buying organic versions of the “Dirty Dozen”. I talked about this last night on LXTV with Sara Gore and Jane Hanson.

Chocolate and Tyler Florence

(Me, Tyler Florence)

Not only did I get to see my fun friends of LX TV today, but I got to talk about one of the loves of my life – is it sad that chocolate is on that list? And, run in to celeb chef Tyler Florence who made fresh summer salads with Sara Gore. Check out his site www.tylerflorence.com for lots of great recipes.

Speaking of chocolate, here is a pic of one I have been eating lately. It is 99.9% cacao!! CRAZY! I can’t for sure say if I truly like it or I just like because I know it is healthy… Get back to you on that… Regardless, it has been the chocolate of choice lately.

I need some zzzz’s!

I have to confess that where I fall short (est!) on living my most Nutritious Life is with sleep. Today I got to chat with Dr. Michael Breus, author of, Beauty Sleep, on LX TV. He is a sleep genius! I am going to practice some good sleep hygiene this week – ALL week – by setting a bedtime (why do kids get to have them? I want one! So I am giving myself one – again…), deep breathing before I even try to fall sleep and using a real alarm not my blackberry.

Check out Dr. Breus’ site to learn how you can get a better night’s sleep: http://www.yourbeautysleep.com/
